Our History

YouChoose was created as a media campaign to address alcohol related crashes  in 2013.   Through a grant with the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and  the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, we were able to develop an impressive and comprehensive media campaign.  Region Ten prevention inherited and adopted this brand and the campaign to continue our efforts in alcohol and other substance related prevention services.  Region Ten Prevention services, branded as YouChoose, incorporates a number of services, programs, trainings and supports along the continuum of mental health and wellness services.

Did You Know?

Every month staff create and post "Stall Talks" on different topics related to Mental Health in every bathroom at the schools?

Our Present

Region Ten Prevention and Family Wellness conducted a community needs assessment in 2016 to determine if there were new areas of concerns and where we should focus our efforts in the next three years. The needs assessment showed three priority areas: opioid abuse (including heroin and prescription drugs), binge drinking, and family wellness. Here are some examples of the work we have done in response to these priorities:

  • Worked with our partners to educate the community on opioids through trainings such as REVIVE! and promote safe storage and disposal resources.

  • Partnered with Virginia ABC for events such as BOLT for middle school students and their parents to learn more about alcohol use in youth.

  • Researched and trained in a new parenting program (Family Check-Up) that we believe will better address the parenting support needs of our community.

Our Future

Our department and services continue to grow as we learn more about what the community needs. Changing trends in substance use like the opioid crisis or increase of e-cigarette use in youth may direct our future marketing and services. We are eagerly learning more about ACEs and how to deliver the most strengths-based and accessible parenting programs that we can. We hope that you will join us in supporting a stronger, safer, and healthier community in our region. Please consider becoming a partner in one of the community coalitions to lend your voice to those individuals and organizations helping our community choose to be healthy and thrive!
